This 3-hour live virtual training will expand upon basic competencies to develop an advanced understanding of mental healthcare experiences of gender diverse populations and our role as mental health providers in mitigating disparities and decreasing barriers to help-seeking. This is an intermediate level training, assuming prior training and/or experience with gender diversity, particularly related to language and basic concepts. This training will summarize relevant data regarding disparities in healthcare faced by gender diverse populations and variables related to clinician competencies to work with gender diverse populations.
Participants will be exposed to a comprehensive review of relevant research data published between 2020-2025, with an emphasis on clinical applications of said data to increase gender diverse competencies, reduce disparities, and increase access to affirming mental health services. Information covered will include: factors mitigating or amplifying disparities (and our role as providers), barriers to care (and our role as providers), a review of Microaggression Theory and Minority Stress Theory as applied to psychological practice with gender diverse populations, diagnostic considerations and pitfalls, and collateral treatment considerations for minors, adults, and geriatric populations.
Identify the professional, legal and ethical issues related to providing gender affirming healthcare.
List disparities faced by gender diverse populations, and factors which either amplify or mitigate those disparities.
Analyze relevant research to identify diagnostic comorbidities, considerations, and pitfalls.
